What are you using as your base? Apple juice? Cider from a local mill? Pressing your own apples?

I plan on squeezing 60 pounds of apples with my thighs.
JK. Local, (hopefully) unpasteurized cider from the store, or maybe from a nice little Amish roadside stand. Failing that, apple juice. Ugh. I hope it's not apple juice.

I'm thinking about a mead.

Honey is a bitch to find in large amounts (for cheap). For a 4-4.5 gallon batch (I got a slightly-less-than-5-gallon carboy, fucking why), it requires between... 4-12 pounds of honey, which is somewhere on the order of... 60$. Maybe when I get my brewing chops more refined, I'll blow that much on a batch of mead, but the risk of me accidentally-a-bacterial-infection is too great, since I'm brewing to SAVE money.
